ACI-ecotec: where the German economy pulsates

“Top 100” lists the most innovative companies in the country.

This year ACI-ecotec GmbH & Co. KG is one of them.

Zimmern ob Rottweil – resourceful staff working in a creative, motivating environment have enabled the medium-sized company to climb the ladder – onto the list of the top 100 innovators in Germany. On Thursday 1st of July, Lothar Späth presented the “Top 100” seal of approval to ACI-ecotec in Rostock Warnemünde.

Innovation success and individual professional staff development are closely intermeshed in the Baden-Württemberg based company which helps to bring sunshine into houses and office buildings with its machines and facilities for manufacturing photovoltaic systems. Any one of the 95 employees can become an inventor and have their name added to the in-house “Hall of Fame” of patent applications. “The young industry of photovoltaics is a huge playground for our workers who want to conquer the associated technologies and find the answer to whole range of specific problems”, stated the chief executive officer, Karl-Heinz Menauer. This was how the company managed by the engineer developed the “ecoCarrier”™. The product not only supports the manufacture of photovoltaic cells but also transports them.

Such ideas are realized because the innovative climate of the company encourages inventions, as shown in the analysis made by “Top 100”. If an employee’s idea is patented, it practically guarantees his/her job security and career. “In many cases, a new work field evolves from an innovation thought up by a member of staff, and he/she is naturally allowed to manage and advance it”, Menauer explained. The good reputation of the respective employee is thus assured in the whole industry. ACI-ecotec promotes this development and allows employees to devote their full concentration to technical details. Day-today operative business and administrative tasks are essentially taken over by other members of staff in order to relieve the workload on the inventor.

Over a period of several months, the Vienna University of Economics and Business assessed the innovative behavior of 248 medium-sized companies in Germany. The best 100, among them ACI-ecotec, have been awarded the seal of approval for one year. “Good ideas which are received by the market don’t just turn up. We have to work hard every day to make them happen. Of course, we’re really pleased that our labors have been 1st July 2010 rewarded and it shows us that we’re on the right path. In some ways, it also shows us that our good ideas won’t run out in the future”, said Menauer.

In total, 32, 500 members of staff work for Germany’s top innovators. They fiddle around and show no fear of new ideas. This is thanks to their employers, who provide optimum conditions for creativity through consistent innovation management in order to get the best out of their workforce. It also makes them important drivers of the German economy: in 2009 they made a turnover of 11.1 billion Euros. 42 of the 100 medium-sized companies carrying this year’s seal of approval are ranked first in their sector and 10 of them are world leaders. That traditional culture and a desire to change can coexist has been proved by 60 family-owned enterprises which are among the “Top 100”. Within the last three years, 86 of the 100 companies have experienced above-average growth rates in their sector.
